Quest for ideal Education for GLD/Twice Exceptional Students

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

You have reached this website because you are searching for information or answers to help your children navigate the Australian Education system.  Your children  appear to be quite bright but they are  struggling, failing or just not that interested in going to school. But that is all your child’s or your fault isn’t it?………………..WRONG

Your child may:-

  • not want to go to school,
  • be bored with school,
  • hate homework,
  • struggles with homework,
  • Feels they are not being taught properly,
  • have behavioural issues,
  • be very frustrated with the whole process of school,
  • possibly being bullied,
  • be very forgetful, moreso than other students,
  • may have been suspended or expelled from school,
  • have difficulty sleeping,
  • has difficulty accepting rules,
  • questions teachers responses too much,
  • points out teacher mistakes,
  • not understand why they are getting into trouble,
  • are introverted, do not want to be the centre of attention, do not want to answer personal questions or state their feelings when asked,
  • be trying hard to fit in but having difficulty being accepted,
  • be very easily led by others,
  • have difficulty asking for help even when older,
  • think they are dumb,
  • appear to have a Jeckyl and Hyde personality,
  • have behaviour issues only at home and not at school,
  • have behaviour issues at school,
  • have difficulties with executive function,
  • be intelligent but have a slow working memory,
  • have speech difficulties,
  • have auditory processing issues,
  • have working memory issues,
  • have sensory processing difficulties,
  • have Visual Perception difficulties,
  • have trouble with fine motor skills,
  • have difficulties expressing their thoughts down on paper,
  • appear to be verbally intelligent,
  • learn differently to other children,
  • be visual learners,
  • may have difficulty reading the words on paper,
  • may have tics, either physical or verbal,
  • may have difficulty expressing their needs,
  • struggle approaching the teacher to ask for help,
  • be just about to drop out of school all together – what is the point of it all and what I am learning  is not going to help me I leave school?
  • have had IQ assessments and/or other assessments done with very high subtests scores and very low subtests scores (classic identification for Twice Exceptional/GLD students)

YES YOU SAY,  BUT AREN’T ALL CHILDREN ARE LIKE THAT……………………….

You may have visited many professionals with your child over the years, because you have known there is something not quite right with your child.  You quite possibly may have visited:-

  • General Practioners
  • Paediatricians
  • Developmental Paedatricians
  • Early Intervention
  • Pre school screening
  • Speech Therapists
  • Audiologist
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Optometrist
  • Behavioural Optometrists
  • Psychologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Family Counselling
  • Dieticians
  • Ear Nose and Throat Specialists
  • Other medical specialists

Your visits to professionals have found that you have an intelligent child but they have a learning disability or something else going on.  Your child needs help with in the school  environment – which schools are overlooking or ignoring your professional assessments, and/or ignoring your requests for help for your child, telling you all children all like that or we don’t see him/her like that. You may be told your child is unmotivated, lazy and if only they just tried a bit harder they could surely do better.

You are looking for answers which the school system cannot or will not provide you with.  In some cases your school will not want you to know about it. This is because schools do not know how to address your childs needs, as your children are are outside the box.

If this is the case, you most likely have a child who is known in the education system as Gifted with Learning Disabilities, GLD, Twice Exceptional, 2E, Dual Exceptionalities or DE.  All of these terms mean the same thing. Although the DEC policy appears to be removed from the DEC website they do acknowledge GLD students on their Acronyms page http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-us/information-access/a-z-of-acronyms-and-abbreviation

Please note this website has been written by a parent/community member who has learnt quite a few things the hard way and wish they had known about a lot sooner rather than later. The links and information contained within was information learnt from many wonderful  people sharing their knowledge and Online support groups such as GLD Australia and Gifted Families.  These are things that were discovered/happened over many years that I felt I wanted to share in the hope it may help others.  It is information I myself would have liked to have had and thought others in similar circumstances may feel the same.
